My maltese is 4 months old and his hair is getting pretty long about 2 1/2 inches long. I would like to cut it to 1 inch, summer is coming and we live in Hawaii. But some one told me if you cut puppy hair to soon it grows differently. is 4 months to young? How old should my maltese be for his first hair cut?
You should call the groomer and ask what they think their opinion is. I have a 2 yr. old long hair chihuahua and in January he was attacked by an unleashed dog. They ended up shaving him to clean the wounds up. Months later(now) his hair grew back differently. It's not soft anymore like it used to be. It's little more coarse and just rougher. However, mine was shaved and your will just have a hair cut. You should ask the groomer though. How old should my maltese be for his first hair cut?
I haven't heard about cutting the fur too soon.
As far as I'm aware it's fine to start getting your puppy's hair trimmed as soon as they've had all their puppy injections and the earlier you start the easier it is for them to get used to the groomers. The woman we plan on using as our groomer advised us to get our puppy done anytime, relatively soon after getting all of his puppy shots.
um the younger you start them off at a groomer the better off the groomer and your dog will be because if you start now your pup would be used to it by the time he's one. and hair doesn't grow differently unless he hasn't shed that puppy coat you might want to ask your groomer on that one but i'm thinkin the younger the better.
I was a groomer for many years, and we would begin working with the dogs with brushes at about 6 weeks old to get the used to the table, etc. We'd cut the hair beginning around 12 weeks old. For the dogs we would do, which were roughly 100 each week in the shop, we never saw a dog that had this type of problem.
I don't think it would be a problem. You should start taking them to the groomers young so that they can get used to it. I started taking my cockers when they were about that age because they have massive amounts of hair. All else fails, just call a groomer and ask them when they would recommend starting. If they are good, they will have a proper answer for you.
