What is the term for cutting your dead ends but not enough to look like you got a hair cut?

I read on some website that when you say you want a trim, it means short enough so it's noticeable that you got your hair cut, and there's a term for just cutting off the dead/split ends, but making it not noticeable.What is the term for cutting your dead ends but not enough to look like you got a hair cut?

it can either be referred to as ';trimming or sniping';


you may find either term useful where ever you go in the US

also you can just say that you want only a half- a whole inch off(if they don't understand what trimming is)

I thought it was just called a trim. But just say i'm trying to grow my hair so don't take alot off and they'll understand.
